What we've learnt working in Blidworth
Blidworth is hillier than most of our patch, and clay in places, which is a combination that punishes a badly built garden. Water that can't get away sits on clay, and gardens that step down steeply end up as one unusable slope with a shed at the bottom.
The answer is nearly always terracing — two or three flat levels with a properly footed and drained retaining wall between them. We set the levels out on site with pegs so you can see it before we dig, and there's always free-draining stone and weep holes behind every wall we build.
