The base is the whole job
Artificial grass laid straight onto soil or an old lawn will hold water, sink where you walk and ripple within a season. We build the same kind of base we'd put under paving — dug out, Type 1 compacted, then a grano or sand-and-cement layer screeded dead flat and rolled.
On top of that goes a weed membrane, then the grass, seamed with joining tape and adhesive so you can't find the joins, and fixed to a treated timber or paving perimeter. It drains straight through, and it's usable the day we finish.
- Excavated and Type 1 sub-base compacted in layers
- Grano or sharp sand laying course screeded and rolled flat
- Weed membrane under the full area
- Joints seamed with tape and adhesive, not overlapped
- Perimeter fixed to treated timber or paving edge
- Brushed up and, on pet installations, sand-infilled
