Where tarmac makes the most sense

On a big area — a long drive, a farm approach, a business yard — tarmac wins on cost per square metre and it wins on speed. A drive that would take four days in block paving can be surfaced in one, and the whole area is trafficable within hours.

It needs edge restraint to last, which is where cheap jobs cut corners. We either lay against existing kerbs and walls or install a concrete edging or block soldier course, so the tarmac has something solid to be compacted against instead of feathering away at the perimeter.

  • Base course and 20–25mm wearing course, both rolled hot
  • Concrete edging or block border to restrain the edges
  • Falls set to shed water away from the house and off the highway
  • Optional red or green pigmented wearing course
  • Trafficable the same day, fully cured within a fortnight

Finishes and extras

Small additions at the surfacing stage that make a tarmac drive look considered rather than utilitarian.

Tarmac questions

Can't see yours? Ring the freephone — you'll get one of us, not a call centre. All FAQs.

How long before I can park on new tarmac?

You can drive on it the same evening once it's cooled. For the first two or three weeks avoid turning the wheels while stationary and don't leave a jack, prop or bike stand on it — it's still hardening.

Why is tarmac cheaper than block paving?

It's laid by machine and roller rather than block by block, so the labour per square metre is a fraction of paving. That gap widens the bigger the area.

Do I need planning permission for a tarmac drive?

Only if it's over 5m² and the water can't drain to a permeable area or soakaway. We plan the falls to a border or soakaway on every job, which keeps you inside permitted development.
